Hi Thomas,

Neither AdAware nor SpyBot S&D has found anything on my system since I began using Spywareblaster years ago, although I still run them occasionally - I'm a little paranoid about my system. When you boot up, Spywareblaster takes note of your system and keeps bad stuff from installing in the first place. I don't know exactly how it works without "running in the background," but it does. It has an extensive database that should be updated every day. Spywareblaster is free and you can update manually for free (perhaps just before shutting down each day), but for $9.95 a YEAR you can get autoupdates on bootup, which I think is a great bargain.

Comodo firewall has similar capabilities (also free), but it can be a little complex. To get the most of it, you really need to read the help file to gain a little understanding of how to rate things as they request access and how to reduce notifications without losing protection. I think it depends more on heuristics than databases, although, like Spywareblaster, it has both. I run both.

Spywareblaster restricts known dangerous internet sites to prevent your browser from being misdirected there (check the box). It prevents ad and tracking cookies for IE and Firefox (check the boxes). You should occasionally create a System Snapshot - start the application & click the button. It can protect your hosts file (although Comodo - and also ZoneAlarm - do that already - so I have this disabled). It can turn off flash, although there are better blockers - a PlugIn for Firefox and TurnFlash for I.E..that are easier to turn on and off, so it isn't available for malicious/annoying usage by others, but is easy to turn on when you really need it.

There are so many truly excellent free-for-personal-use security applications out there that it makes absolutely no sense to me to pay invasive scammers like Symantec for it. Most of the free ones have paid versions too, primarily I think for business licenses, with extra features I haven't so far needed.

Good luck,
AnnaSummers

I would uninstall your AdAware and then reinstall it. Or if ME is
supported, update to AdAware 2007 (free version).
