  There are probably several THOUSAND PC applications out there which
routinely use files with an extension of .DAT -- short for "data".
What's *in* those files is up to the application.  No viewer can hope
to guess which application uses a given .DAT file, so while
individual cases might appear sensible, in general you cannot expect
them to be viewable.
