Here goes another shot at your problem:
Since the printer worked before, let's assume it's OK and the problem
is s/w. In addition, you can't print from DOS prompt... So let's walk
you through the settings in the "Start\Settings\Printers\{your
printer's name}". Right-click on its icon to access the Properties
sheet. What you need is the Details tab:
Check that "Capture printer port" has nothing in the 2nd line;
Timeout settings : defaults are : not selected - 15s, retry - 45s;
Spool settings : Select "Spool so ... finishes faster" and "... after 1st
page is spooled"
Port settings : Check "Spool MS-DOS jobs" and "Check state before
printing"
This one cured my trouble with the antique Epson FX-286.
