Just a note from my own personal experience, I've been running SP1 on two
machines since their builds a couple of years back due to worries about the
problems Peter mentioned. But recently, while trying to install some software, I
got a message that it couldn't load on my machine without needed updates
(actually called for a SP for win 2000). So I crossed my fingers and loaded SP2.
Software then loaded and, as yet, I haven't had any noticable problems.
I loaded several different programs in a matter of a couple of days so I'm
not entirely sure but I think the prog that wouldn't load may have been Adobe
Reader 9.

Hal,
It may well be that you're not aware of the numerous problems that the XP
SP2 pack
caused for thousands of people, but as one that experienced them first hand,I
can tell
you that SP2 indeed caused a lot of problems after it came out.
Not only that, prior to its release several problems were identified but not
fixed by
Microsoft.
It seems that memory fails at times ;)
Doing a simple search query will give you millions of links pertaining to
the
problems with SP2.
I only picked a couple - anybody interested will find numerous entries.

It may also interest you that even now, many people still run the original XP
release
as well as XP w SP1.
A lot of the Service packs,whether SP1,SP2 or SP3 are security related,some
issues
really posed no problem -were never exploited - but only identified by
security
companies as a possible vulnerability.
Since those companies made the info public,M$ was either forced or obligated
to
provide a solution so as not to look stupid or be held liable in case the
supposed
exploits were to appear in reality.
Granted, today most of the kinks in SP2 have been worked out.
On the other hand,to their shame,Microsoft has provide very limited useful
updates
with all their service packs.Improvements have been minimal.
Most of the updates are security related and very little effort was made to
improve
usability in XP.
Numerous software authors, including many freeware developers, fortunately
have
provided us with applications and utilities that far exceed the ones
provided by
Microsoft when it comes to usability and user friendliness.
It is no wonder that many people decide to un-install certain service packs
because
they don't meet their needs.
To chastise them for it is really unnecessary since it's on their machine
-not yours.
If they find things work better without the service pack,it's really their
decision.
I have been lying low on this subject, but when certain statements are made,
I felt it necessary to provide a counterpoint.
