it firsts goes into the kind of DOS screen with boot options that one
gets when one hits F8, then it counts down 30 seconds (with a screen
counter), and then boots into Windows.  How do I make it boot
directly into Windows again?"

Open msdos.sys (in your root -C- directory) in notepad and see if the line
"BootMenuDelay" immediately below all the X's shows 30.  If so, change it
to 1 (or whatever time in seconds you want the menu to show), and save.
