Hi David,

I'm going to intersperse my comments with your questions. Keep in mind you'll get lots of
different responses to which AV to use, but this is my take on NAV2002

~~My operating system is XP Home and I have been using Norton Anti-Virus
2002. I have updated the program annually. This year I called Norton
and asked = it the Norton 2004 had any advantage over updating my old
2002 as usual.
Norton said yes it had new anti-virus items that the old one (even =
thought upgraded) doesn't have. So I purchased the 2004 Norton
Anti-Virus.~~

Pretty much the only special "upgrade" with NAV 2004, the features the salesperson
referred to, is the ability to scan instant messages, such as from AIM and others. So that
was pretty much just sales puffery on their part, since any decent AV will run in the
background and stop suspicious files in its tracks. Anything they've "added" is just
bloatware, in my opinion. I also purchased NAV 2004, but changed my mind about
installing it due to the problems it has. I kept my NAV 2002.

~~Now for my problem. I need an updated Anti-Virus ASAP.~~
As long as you get the virus files through live update, or through manual download from
Symantec, you are protected. The antivirus definitions are updated, and that is what you
download through them. As I said, all the other stuff is puffery.

I see that Zone Alarm has come out with an anti-virus program now and
I = am thinking about trying that one. Does anyone have any experience
with the = new Zone Alarm Anti-Virus? Do you have any suggestions on
insuring it won't conflict when (and if) I install it? If Zone Alarm
Anti-Virus is not the program I should use, which one is?

I'm using it now, having accidentally downloaded that version this weekend. I
immediately turned off the antivirus scanning, as NAV2002 does just fine. And there
have been reported conflicts with NAV. In fact, it's not a good policy to have more than
one antivirus scanners running at the same time, or even installed together.
Any of the free ones are okay (AVG, Avast) as I've tried them all. McAfee (retail) is also
acceptable. But you are not running with outdated antivirus files with your NAV2002, and
I think that misunderstanding comes from overzealous sales people. If you're
comfortable with what you have, there's no need to change, just make sure you run live
update once a week, at least. And do it manually once in a while, since program updates
do not come from the automatic one.

If you decide to change, make sure you uninstall NAV before using any other antivirus,
and prevent any conflicts. Good luck.
