I was told to tap it like that by a computer technical person who was
helping me
work through a problem last year and I had to go into Safe Mode to do what
we needed to do.  I don't know what the difference would be. Maybe someone
else on the list here can tell us.

I don't know why the books all say that.  I've always simply held F8 down
until the boot options open. I've been doing it that way for years.
Although you get a few complaining burps from the computer, it seems a lot
easier and more certain. Also less wear and tear on the F8 key contacts.

Is there any reason why it should be tapped rather than held down?
