Try dragging backwards.  If you click the first letter of a word, the whole
word gets selected.  But if you click just AFTER the first letter, then
sweep backwards, only that letter will be selected.
  Works in IE, anyway, and I assume with the others you mention, but I
don't have those ones, so can't test it.
