Yes, if you have that option selected, Scandisk is run before Defrag and
there is no need to run Scandisk separately. However, most people run
Scandisk more often than Defrag. This option just makes sure there are
no errors on the disk before starting to move stuff around - which
prevents problems caused by moving cross-linked files. If you have
Scandisk set for a thorough scan, it will take a long time though.
A similar thing happened to me once. I copied the contents of a hard
drive partition to another disk to be used to replace the old disk. I
failed to run Scandisk before I did this and it happened that there was
an error in a file. After doing the copy, Windows would not run. I
started over with a Scandisk on the original disk and found the error.
After fixing it, the copy worked perfectly the second time.
