As a follow up to what I recommend as a firewall - it is Zone
Alarm.  Someone on this board questioned the impartiality of Zone alarm
saying that Zone Alarm was vulnerable to spam and attacks because they saw
that it was labeled as a Broderbund product.  I wrote to Zone Alarm and got
this reply:

Thank you for your interest. Zone Labs, Inc. is still a privately held
company. Broderbund is a distributor of our boxed version of ZoneAlarm Pro.
