It sounds like the original mail pick-ups were not completed entirely.
When a delivery of mail from a server is not acknowledged properly
by your e-mail program, it will be sent over and over until it is.
In the meantime, some "smaller mailboxes" on the server may fill up and
either refuse new mail, and/or become difficult to access.
Note this can also happen if your e-mail server has had problems.
Sometimes they "dump" all their back-ups into the system after a problem
in the hope that all your mail will "get through", even if more than once.
