Check out Thumbs Plus at http://www.cerious.com - there is an evaluation
download of the program. It is a very fast cataloging program that creates
thumbnails of the images. Also allows for editing, etc. Another similar
product is Firehand Ember. Both are good, I found Thumbs to be a bit better
and purchased it. A bit costly at $60 or so, but it is a good program.

I gave in. Now that I have one, I'm looking for suggestions for a software
application that can help the user catalog, annotate, and arrange photos,
with the ultimate purpose being to transfer them to CD's for permanent
storage. I have a copy of Adaptec Photo Relay, which seems like the type of
thing I'm looking for, but it came as part of the Adaptec EasyCD Creator
Suite and doesn't have any documentation to speak of.
