I always mark CDs with the max speed, as given on the
original packaging...  (I still have a large variety of 4, 10, 12,
16x, etc. since I don't seem to be able to use them all before
getting faster rated ones, on sale...

"On sale" is a key part of this...  I became more discriminating
as I realized that "some" manufactures "dump" marginal disks
by shoving them out the door with a sale...  Others simply
have an over-production (or something) and the disk are slow(er),
but work well...

I have "always" gotten rid of that error by using a different brand
of disk.  Some burners are "temperamental" about the exact brand
of disks they like...    YMMV...
