As a rule, ScanDisk and Defrag will not run if there is activity in the
background.
You have two alternatives: You can start in Dos, or disable all programs
running in background EXCEPT EXPLORER and SYSTRAY.
You can do the disabling by CTRL>ALT>DELETE then instruct the window to
"End Task" for everything EXCEPT EXPLORER and SYSTRAY.
I have a very useful little application called "Enditall" that closes all
of the applications running except EXPLORER, SYSTRAY, and Itself.
THEN Scandisk and Defrag will run for me.
