I did get a copy of ViewFix, but have not yet installed it - I download
way more stuff than I have time to implement! Is this want is known as a
download junkie?

Alas, it seems that XP has some work yet to be done to fix some of its
errant behavior. - such as my Control Panel, and your window size!

Unfortunately Peter, I've tried without success, the usual methods of
fixing this annoyance, including making sure that the
Tools\Options\View\RememberEachFoldersViewSettings box is checked.

That's why I thought perhaps the default folder opening size might be
settable via the registry.

Re your problem with the Detail View holding as a default in your XP,
perhaps you didn't see my post of a few months back, when I referred to
a little app called ViewFix, which works very well at ensuring that
folders open with the file-view setting the way you want.

Unfortunately, it doesn't regulate the window size.
