  "LM" is "Lan Manager".  I believe this was originally a version of
OS/2, configured to run as a server and compete with Novell's
NetWare.  While I don't think it made much impact on the market, the
initials "LM" continue to be sprinkled through Windows networking
for backwards compatibility.

  I believe "LM announce" lets the network code show an alert [e.g.
"Printing done"] on the screen, if it is enabled.
