I misunderstood your need so my previous reply
was wrong. Another option (besides Bob's suggestion)
is to use Dynamic HTML devices like Cascading Style Sheets
and the <LAYER> tag..
The LAYER tag allows you to superimpose one object
on top of another so that it appears that only a small
portion of the "original"/larger item has changed.
Netscape has a good writeup in their DEVLOPERS area.
Go to:
http://developer.netscape.com/docs/manuals/communicator/dynhtml/index.htm
and then select: PART 2 POSITIONING HTML CONTENT
