Thanks to all who replied. The consensus is: it means BOLD or underlined or emotion plus a few others. I guess it comes back to why I asked in the first place. It seems to me that the writer knows what he or she means and it is up to the reader to try to figure out what they mean, with the astericks.         Thanks again   Bill
