Some readers recently asked for assistance when installing new software,
when they see the "autoexecNT error" message telling them the system is
unsuitable for 16-bit software and that installation cannot proceed.
This message is misleading, and doesn't really mean what it says.
The issue may occur if one or more of the following files are missing or
damaged:
· Config.nt
· Autoexec.nt
· Command.com
Recent SP2 patches may remove the AutoexecNT file. To check if it is
present, Open the Windows folder, then the System32 folder, and you should
see those files in there.
If any are missing, the folder Windows/Repair contains copies of the first
two files. Copy them over from there. For Command.com, you should be able
to download it from various sites, or you may have a system backup or
another computer from which you could copy it.
Certain viruses may also corrupt or remove these files.
The problem usually occurs when trying to install archaic programs written
for earlier versions of Windows. Quite often, these programs will run just
fine on XP, despite the system telling you otherwise.
