This question might be more appropriate for PCSOFT's sister list, PCBUILD.
If the choice is greyed out, this may very likely mean that your modem is
configured as a "Standard modem" and that the specific driver provided by USR
is not loaded/selected. [I have a modem that insists on being detected as a
"Standard modem" in addition to the manufacturer's driver, but I can then
disable that device entry in Device Manager to force use of the
manufacturer's driver.]
To control volume with the "Standard modem" driver, you need to go to the
"Extra settings" field in the "Modems" control panel applet. There are two
settings to no about:
Mn:
"M0" is "no monitoring" -- never turn the speaker on. M1 is the most
common monitoring enabled setting, some modems also support M2 and M3
settings, fine-tuning exactly *when* the speaker will be on. If M0 is
selected, any Ln setting will be ignored.
Ln:
"L0" is "level 0" -- minimum volume. M1 is normal volume, on modems that
support them, L2 and L3 are even louder.
In your specific case, inserting "L0" in "Extra settings" should reduce the
speaker volume, perhaps below what you can hear, and "M0" should actually
turn it off.
