Carol,
I have never used Maxthon, but I believe it's a browser "shell" for Internet
Explorer (IE), that is to say it uses the IE browser. So any security or
hacker concerns you may have with IE would remain with Maxthon. From my
experience Firefox is pretty much a non-conflicting program. I would suggest
you uninstall and download a new copy. Corruption may have occurred on the
initial download. I don't if you downloaded the full Mozilla/Firefox the
first time, but I found that downloading just Firefox as a standalone was
much cleaner. By the way,it is always helpful  in questions to this forum if
you indicate at a minimum the Operating System you are using since this
often can be of importance in a software matter.
