If it's more than a few years old, take a look at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague and pop the cover to have a
looksee.
If you don't find any bad on the motherboard, pull the power supply and look
inside it.
Also look up the drive's model number in Google. There may be a firmware
update it needs.
