Most files will open in Word Pad. Sometimes this will give you a clue as to
what the file is.

I have an Athlon 800Mhz, 98SE. Within the last 2 weeks, a strange occurrence
has begun to repeat itself. While I would not consider myself anywhere an
expert user, I have been using personal computers since the days of Olivetti
and Wang, and I have never seen this. Maybe I've just been lucky. At least
four times in the last two weeks, a Windows icon (white page with Windows
flag) has out of no-where appeared on my desktop. The description shown
below the icon is simply a "~" symbol. "Properties" shows simply a "General"
tab which reflects "Type" = File, "Size" = 209KB, and "Attributes" =
Archive, and "Location" = C\WINDOWS\Desktop.
