Go into Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Settings/Advanced/Virtual
Memory (I'm reading XP--might be slightly different for W98). Anyway, you
are looking for Advanced Virtual Memory Settings.

Try unticking "Let Windows choose..." and set virtual memory manually to,
say, 128 or maybe 256 Mb. OK your way out, reboot, check the same window
to ensure that the new setting has stuck. Now see what happens when you
open Office.

The usual rule of thumb is to set virtual memory at twice RAM as a starting
point.

It's one of those error messages that doesn't really mean what it
says. Although you may have plenty of RAM, some programs seem to want to
write to virtual memory regardless. If this is limited or constrained by
Windows management or lack of disk space, you could get that error message.

The other possibility is that you have too many progs running at startup
which might be consuming too much memory.

To check this, run Msconfig, unplug your phone line if you are on
broadband, and untick everything including a-v and firewall.

Reboot and see if Office now runs OK. If so, suspect one or more of your
startup progs. Especially anything like Nortons, which is notoriously
demanding.
