Deleting the normal.dot template usually solves the kind of problem you are
describing. Since it did not fix it in your case, you should probably try
reinstalling Word, or even Office. You might try going through the Office
repair procedure, but I have not found that to be very helpful in most
cases. A reinstall does a better job. Good luck.

Help! After 4 years, when I try to open Word (in MS Office 2000 Small
Business) I get a rude sound, plus window: "This program has performed an
illegal operation and will be shut down." Details: "WINWORD caused an
invalid page fault in module WINWORD. EXE at (015f:3010bf99)" The
characters in parentheses are different every time I get this window, as are
the strings of characters that follow under "Registers" and "Bytes at
CS:EIP"
I went online to MS Knowledge Base Article 305166 which seemed to be the
answer. As directed, I changed the names of THREE "Normal.dot" files to
"Normal.old", as instructed. NO help! Same rude noise, same lousy window
pops up when I try to launch Word! I'm running win98 on a Dell, 450 mhz,
8gb, recently defragged, scanned, waxed and polished. HELP!!
