rather than tabs, tabs rather than indents, and such things, click on
the backwards P "show/hide all nonprinting characters".  This provides
all you need to see spaces/tabs/indents/proper paragraph marks vs.
newlines, etc.  It does not help you with character formatting - bold,
underline, etc, or character styles.

For problems with paragraph styles, go into normal view, click Tools -
Options ... - View tab, and make "Style area width" 1in or so.  Close
options and you will find a column showing the styles of all paragraphs
(you can resize it with the mouse).

For all other problems the best choice is the help arrow (arrow with a
question mark) - click it and click on text to see all its attributes,
paragraph and character, from styles and direct.  Most novice users will
have applied all formatting directly and not bothered with styles.  This
help arrow is widely felt to be less useful than WP reveal codes ... but
you're stuck with it.

Don't mess about with the undo button.
