SolutionOne or more of the DLL files required by your pinpoint tools product is missing or corrupted, so the system cannot load the file. It can be difficult to determine exactly which file is causing the problem since the program will not load, so the easiest way to fix the problem is to reinstall the program.

To do a clean re-installation of your program, please follow the steps in the Knowledge Base article How to Do a Clean Install to Correct and Prevent Installation Problems.

How to Do a Clean Install to Correct Install Problems

SituationYou want to know the best way to install your pinpoint tools product, or you ran into a problem with an earlier installation and need to re-install. SolutionThe most common causes of installation problems are:
Anti-virus programs, which may prevent the installation process from updating Windows files and the Windows registry
Other programs running in the background during installation, which may keep certain Windows files in use or locked so that the pinpoint tools program's installation process cannot update them
Some other programs' installation process which has not completed yet, perhaps requiring a reboot of your PC before it can finish what it is doing
Not rebooting after completing the pinpoint tools program's installation process, which is sometimes required to install Windows system files since they are normally locked or in use while Windows is running
To prevent these problems, we recommend the following procedure for installing any program, whether made by pinpoint tools or any other software manufacturer:
Reboot your computer. This clears the memory and also lets any other pending installation process (from some other program you may have been installing) finish what it was doing.
After Windows starts back up, close down any programs that start up automatically. This includes SideACT!, Outlook or other email programs, the Microsoft Office toolbar, instant messaging, RealPlayer and so on.

Look for any program icons in the Windows system tray, which is the area in the lower right corner of your Windows screen where the clock is. Many programs that run in the background put a miniature icon in the system tray. Often you can left-click or right-click on that icon to pop up a menu, which may have a choice such as Quit, Exit or Close to shut the program down. Close down as many of these as you can.
If you have an anti-virus program, such as McAfee or Norton AntiVirus, disable it now. See your anti-virus program's documentation for details on how to do this.

As an example: In Norton AntiVirus 2002 and Norton SystemWorks 2002 for Windows 98 and Windows ME, you can temporarily disable virus protection as follows: Open the AntiVirus program using its icon, click the Options button to see the Options dialog, uncheck the box for Enable Auto-Protect and then click the OK button to save this setting.

Other anti-virus programs such as McAfee will have a similar procedure for temporarily turning them off.
Now, install (or reinstall) your pinpoint tools product using its CD or the original installation file you downloaded. Unless you were specifically told to do so by pinpoint tools Technical Support, it is not necessary to uninstall an existing copy of the product first. Just install on top of any existing copy.

If the program is on CD, just put the CD in your CD-ROM drive and the installation program should start up automatically.

If you downloaded the program from the pinpoint tools web site or some other web store, you will have downloaded a single large, executable file and saved it somewhere on your hard drive. The name of the file depends on which program it is. (For example, the name of the Trans/ACT for Pocket PC installation program is TransACTPPCSetup.exe.) Using Windows Explorer, locate the file you downloaded and double-click it to start the installation.
The pinpoint tools program installation wizard will guide you through the installation. At each step, the recommended installation option will already be selected for you as the default. To use this default, just click the Next button in the wizard to go to the next step. Do not change the default options unless you have a specific reason for doing so.
The pinpoint tools program installation process may need to update some Windows system files or install some Microsoft-supplied files, such as MDAC (Access database engine files). Usually it will make you reboot your computer after installing these updates. After you reboot, the pinpoint tools installation program will automatically start back up where it left off.
At the end of the pinpoint tools program's installation, it may display a Read Me file or a Getting Started Guide. Print a copy of this file since it contains useful information you will need when using your pinpoint tools product. You will then need to close the word processor window to return to the installation program and finish up.
Reboot your computer when installation is complete. This will allow the installation program to install any system updates it could not do while Windows was running, and will also re-enable your anti-virus program and anything else that normally runs when Windows starts up.
Following these steps will almost always ensure a successful installation. If you still run into problems after this, please go to our website and start a Support Case. Please write down any error messages or make screen shots to help our support technicians diagnose the problem for you.
