I asked a Tech last night about this, and he said they had some corrupted
windows components. Now, how true this is ---- I dont know. But later I was
wanting redo the '- fax -' on my printer and it told me to put my Windows XP
Home Edition CD in the drive... and when it came up, there were several
listings that you could choose from.

1. Install Windows XP
2. Install Options - Windows Components
3. Perform Additional Task
4. Check System on Compatibilities

So perhaps you could try the #2.

Hi Jim,

In checking some of the online forums it seems there are some third party
applications, Spyware Doctor 3.5 for one, that can interfere with chkdsk
running. Check these links for more information and suggested solutions:

Sysinternals Forums: Cannot open volume for direct access!:

I am unable to run CHKDSK, it cannot lock or open volume for direct access.:

I ran chkdsk. It said it had to restart. It did so and gave the message
"Checking file system on C:"
"Cannot open volume for direct access"
I found a note on this from Microsoft where they say one should download
Service Pack 2 to fix it. I did so a long time ago and am up to date on
updates.
How can I get rid of this stupid message every time I log on and how can I
run
chkdsk (btw I run chkdsk from: my computer, c:, properties, tools
