Charly,
I haven't tried the some of the methods suggested in some of the replies I've
read--manual high memory loading seems a tedious, humbug process, and while
novel, I don't know if reloading memmaker into a DOS file and running in DOS
outside of WIN 95 works...
There is, however, software available that allows you to reassert your ability
to load devices and drivers into the high memory, Quarterdeck's QEMM97 (it's
similar to the old DOS QEMM, but it works in WIN 95)... I've been successfully
using it on my Dell 133 Pentium (128M RAM, 2.6G HD) and have 617K of free low
memory out of the 604K--It also seems to force WIN 95 to cough up unused
memeory blocks more efficiently... After install, I also noted that the WIN95
shut-downs were less eventful and hang-prone, I can't say it was QEMM97, but
the change occurred right after the install...
Like most things, however, it has downsides--QEMM97 loaded and set-up
relatively easily on my Pentium, but I had major problems on our laptop (Compaq
Presario) and my wife's Dell Pentium and gave up trying to install it on either
(I may retry again later)--Uninstalls are tough w/some Registry cleanup
necessary (back your Registry up just before installing), and think twice about
trying it on your wife's computer--I'm still hearing about it...
