I recently replied to Gloria Vandiver's post regarding a Microsoft patch
e-mail. Having recently received a number of similar, but genuine Microsoft
mailings I assumed that is what she received. It appears that there is
indeed a malicious mailing that imitates the Microsoft announcements and
does include an attachment. When I received my first Microsoft mailing, I
was suspicious, but I verified it as being from Microsoft by looking at the
message header to see who the real originator was, not who the message said
is was from. This can be done in Outlook by selecting View/Options from the
menu of a message. However, it may be confusing to many users as to how to
read the header information.

My revised response then conforms to what some others have already said. Do
NOT open and run any attachments that you get in the e-mail unless you are
ABSOLUTELY certain as to their origin and purpose. Sorry if I had mislead
anyone in my  original response.
