 How about doing a system restore to a date prior to your directx update?
Also you may find help at this MS support site.

  help please,,,i used to be able to play a game called "peter jacobsons golden tee golf" on my pc.i believe i had service pak 2 on at the time.i think what may be the problem is directx,wich i updated.?now the game wont start up,i get a error report that wants to send to microsoft.does anyone know how to trouble shoot this ,,,or some sites to go to to get help?
