  I believe that in the BIOS configuration, under Peripherals or possibly
Power Settings, you'll find an option to "Wake on COM1" or the like.  You
want to turn it off.

  One of the reasons I like my external modem is that it's EASY to turn on
and off, without shutting down or rebooting the whole machine.  Did you
perhaps mean internal, or is there something unusual about your wife's modem?
