Spammers scanning for e-mail addresses. At least
over year ago before my server was removed behind
relay typical activity was that they try usernames find in
Internet. Some providers block messages without
To: and From: header but some don't. These headers
are not needed to distribution of e-mail if you run
server has spammers today do. Reason not to  use
bouncing - their programs already know that address
is real and bouncing confirms that address is probably
not throw away address.
