Hi Harriet,
Theoretically there is a danger,but ActiveX is not the culprit perse.
It is whether or not anything is embedded in the pictures and if
there is a malicious ActiveX control on the flash drive.
ActiveX is very useful in itself,but can be abused,like anything else.
The extension for it is  .ocx
"ActiveX. Note: This file type can become infected and should be carefully scanned 
if someone sends you a file with this extension. ..... "

In other words,scan the contents of the flash drive for malware,virus etc.
If your AV doesn't scan external drives, copy the files to a folder and then scan.
Actually,if the AV is set correctly and doing its job,it will scan the files while 
being copied.

So be cautious,but not paranoid :-)
