One of the servers I use at work did this a couple of years ago. It
turned out that some update was encountering an issue where each night
it would download, try to install, fail, and reboot the machine. The
same update had no trouble when I installed it manually, but ever since
I keep Automatic Update set only to download and notify, and not to go
ahead and try to install on its own.

Shortly after that I've had problems with the PC restarting sometime during the wee hours of the morning. Sometimes when I get up it has restated and appears to be normal, while other times it is constantly restarting--it will restart and 2 - 3 minutes it will restart again and keep up this cycling.

If it's more than a few years old, take a look at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague and pop the cover to have
a
looksee.
If you don't find any bad on the motherboard, pull the power supply and
look
inside it.
I've had success replacing bad ones on about 9 out of 12 tries, which is
replacing all of matching type to any that look bad. I buy mine from
http://www.mouser.com/ .
