Yes. I've run scandisk, format, fdisk...

Yes.

compared to some I've seen.

I let the MB do the detecting, and it got it right.

The only thing identical is the manufacturer; both are from
Seagate. One is an ST31277A and the other is an ST51080A. Might be
something here? Special formatting, fdisking necessary?

Did the KB thing on Extender stuff...not much there to help a
rookie!
Autoexec.bat and config.sys files coming to you off-list.
