Thanks for the various suggestions.  I tried again with power mgt
disabled, and *definitely* no screensaver.  I also set the swapfile to a
fixed size.  Still the same: the defrag operation restarts with the
message "Drive contents changed", every 5 minutes, exactly.

The odd thing is when I look at the disk afterwards, there are no files
with a modified time after the start of the defrag.

Looks like I'm stuck with this one.  Do I need a better defrag tool?!!
