John,

You are still loosing me (us?) with the "converted Access 2000"
do you mean a database designed in 2k and then converted down
to 97?  or do you mean a PC with Access 2k that was somehow
converted back to 97 (or 95???)

I suspect that in any case, this is where your problem lies.

Try loading the WHOLE data file into one of the pure Access 97
machines and save it.  Then try your link with only other pure
Access 97 systems.  Keep the converted machine out of the loop
and see what happens.
