If you have layers in your file (caused by copying and pasting, etc),
click on "layers", and then "flatten image". You can usually tell if you
have layers by looking at the title bar. If it says "myfile.psd (Layer
1)" or something similar, you can be certain you have created a layer.
Layers are usually the reason a file must be saved as Photoshop file.
The other reason would be if you have a transparent background.
