Once I have the songs in mp3 format (usually 192 kbs) I use "MP3 Gain"
(mp3gain.sourceforge.net) to equalize the volume settings, "Intelligent
Audio Splitter"

to trim the files and remove dead air, and "Winamp" (http://www.winamp.com/)
to fill in the "ID3" info.
