To reset your default .gif viewer to IE (or whatever) open
Windows/Winfile.exe, click File/Associate, and type gif.  Then browse to
Internet Explorer.exe, highlight it, and click OK.

I find this is a much more intuitive procedure for setting file extension
associations than the more commonly used but cumbersome "open with"
dialogue boxes.

IE will then be set as your default viewer for .gif files.  Whether or not
it will preview depends on your system.  For that function, I much prefer
Picaview (Shareware, at  http://www.acdsystems.com).  Not only does it give
instant right-click preview of most image types, but lots of useful options
as well, such as instant zoom, conversions, etc.  Unlimited if you don't
mind nagscreens.
