Well. Free Kazaa is sponsored and to cover expenses it is
adware/spyware. Skype is related in way that engine is written
by same people at it uses basically same P2P ethnology.
What means that thought Your computer may go someone
else connection because it is shortest and fastest. AFAIK
connections are encrypted. Also Skype is not adware
(at least now). I have used it and monitored connections
and all connections - there could be multiple - where
seemingly private addresses. All addresses domain names
hinted to ADSL or cabel connection computers.
What comes to safety - any program what connects to Internet
is not completely safe. There is always possible exploits.

PS. I recommend use headsets or at least headphones if You
take long distance calls or use WinCE PDA. Echo delay
is annoying. This is feature of VoIP.
