Phil, the symbol you describe seems to be one of the formatting symbols
(showing that something is "there" but invisible, i.e. it will do something
to the printer but will otherwise be invisible, such as a paragraph mark,
tab mark, "hard" space and so on. Sometimes it's useful to "see" these
formatting commands in a Word document (most of the time it's not)). To
turn the display off, go to the TOOLS menu, go to OPTIONS, and in the VIEW
pane you'll find checkboxes under "formatting marks" uncheck any boxes
which have been checked. That should return the display of Word documents
to keep these embedded formatting commands invisible.
