They are related, but not as you may think.

The two beeps is the signal that a PCMCIA card has been detected. The
beeps are normal and indicate that the slot and PCMCIA card are working
properly (hardware is working).

The error message is due to a partial install of the PCMCIA card.

A couple of things that you could do.

First I would locate the Win 98 install files. On many pre-configured
ThinkPads the Windows install files are located in either c:\Windows\Cabs
or c:\windows\Win98 sub-directories. You can try to locate them (if they
are on your hard drive) by going to Start - Find - Files or Folders and
typing in *.cab . If the files are on your hard drive you should see files
with names like Win98_03. Just remember the path to those files.

Then you can go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Device
manager tab and look under Network Adapters. Highlight the Cardbus adapter
for the network card and then press the Remove button. Click the OK to
confirm and then close all the windows.

Now reboot and the card should be re-detected. As it installs the drivers
for the network card and asks you to insert the Win 98 disk, you can then
point to the install files sub-directory. It should install the correct
file for MSNP32.DLL from the install files.

If you have problems doing that you may have to run the Microsoft program
"RegClean" which will get rid of the bad registry entry referring to the
dll, and/or delete the bad file.

Hope this helps,

Doug
