  There was a virus about two years ago -- I'm afraid I don't remember it's
name -- which installed itself to three registry keys.  Some of the very
first fixes simply deleted those three keys, but one of the keys was
supposed to be present but blank.  If that key was missing, the System32
folder would come up on startup just as you describe.
