since i find this to be a very intriguing topic i am posting again.

Don Penlington's post:--

<<< your new registry is sourced from the disk with which you installed XP---which sounds as if it's not an original Microsoft disk >>>

assuming the install cd is that of the manufacturer of the system (OEM)and not microsoft retail pack (which is not supposed to contain any "extras" as opposed to OEM )and the new registry is from this, then, i find it difficult to understand entries of TWO antivirus programs(norton AND macaffee).i know that branded and system builders computers come with one antivirus program (mostly norton but some with macaffee)do some come with both loaded?

on a side note, if one wants to do away with a about to die HDD (say some bad sectors) and it is just thrown away AFTER FORMATTING does it mean no data can be recovered ? (except of course the data put in by the manufacturer of the hdd... all hdd manufacturers reserve some space and put their own stuff).

will be interesting to learn---Venkat
