Chet,

Changing the hosts file should not affect Windows. At what point during
startup does the error message appear? Does it appear on every startup? Can
you relate it to any other recent changes in the system? Does Windows
exhibit anything else abnormal? This error doesn't sound like Check Disk (in
Windows XP). Many times if Windows is forced to shutdown or detects a
discrepancy in one of the drives, it performs a Check Disk on the next
startup and begins after you see the Windows screen with the progress bar.

Did you initiate a Check Disk? If not, you can start the process by opening
Windows Explorer or My Computer. Right click the drive and select
"Properties". Next, click on the "Tools" tab and under "Error-checking",
click the "Check Now..." button. In the Check Disk window, select both
options for a thorough check and click the "Start" button. You will get a
window telling you it cannot be performed, etc., etc., and ask if you want
to schedule the disk check for the next restart. Answer "Yes". If you do not
select an option in the Check Disk window, it will perform a three phase
disk check immediately.

See the following site for more information and instructions for manually
running the chkdsk command.

i installed..HOWEVER now my scan disk won't work*..since i don't believe
in coincidences could the hosts file be responsible in some way?

can't open..etc" it disappeared so fast on it's way to logging on i
couldn't read it all. thanx, cnorris
