He everyone out there,

Can anyone tell me why my computer (Compaq Presario running Windows XP and only 8 weeks old)  is very sluggish sometimes after start up.  Very sluggish to repond to anything and after a few minutes seems to be as fast as anything and back to it's old self again.  I do all the normal things like defrag once a week if it needs it and disk clean up every day and delete all old cookies.  I don't keep any programs I am not using I keep them on disk and load if needed.  

Could any of you tech experts out there tell me if it could be something that is taking to long to load, maybe in the startup menu.  I am not sure what I really need in there and what I don't.   I am not experienced enough to go removing things from there in case I muck it up and my computer won't start up properly.
