 I also  occasionally make custom IDE ribbon cables for both 40 pin
and 20 pin (floppy).
I'm just picky and want the inside of the case to look neat.
Also I like to have the ribbon cables as short as possible and
out of the way of air flow to the cpu.
   I sometimes use cables with end connectors only.
if only one device is on an IDE channel.
