The reason it works is because the Pentium 233 (MMX) (chip or mobo?) was
designed to interpret 1.5x as 3.5x. I
 believe this was largely due to the fact most motherboards at the time did
not have 3.5x as a multiplier.
Plus it would be a money saver because new motherboards wouldn't need to
have a 3.5x mulitplier setting.
